Mace Point-Defense Interceptor (Consoloidated Mining Corp. PL-225)
The Mace is a remarkable product of "necessity being the mother of invention". This short-range fighter is a fairly straightforward adaptation of the old PL-225 asteroid-survey utility-craft. The Mace was developed by Consolidated Mining Corp. to protect their remote mining bases from pirate raiders, since protection from the military authorities often arrive too late to prevent the raiders from making off with a lot of the mined materials. Designed
to scoot around asteroid fields collecting rock samples and performing
utility tasks, The PL-225 is a rugged and maneuverable little workhorse
with very heavy hull plating to protect it from the rigors of operations
in an asteroid field. Consolidated simply replaced the main ion drive
with a much more powerful unit, and the 4 sample collector arms grouped
around the nose gave place to four single-shot warhead launchers. In
addition, four heavy plasma cannon packs were welded externally around
the forward fuselage in a tight grouping. All the weapons can be salvoed
with devastating effect; more than enough to deter most pirate raiders.
