Colonial Viper Mk.2 Interceptor

The Colonial Viper Mk.2 was similar in configuration, size and mass to the original Mk.1, but it's performance and capabilities were a quantum step ahead. While it was still a short-ranged light fighter it packed a significantly more potent punch and offered far greater agility. The Mk.2's flight controls were integrated into an extensive network of efficient maneuvering jets, allowing the Mk.2 to make snap maneuvers unthinkable with the Mk.1s. Additionally, the Mk.2 featured much improved aerodynamic form as well as ailerons on the wings, enabling much better atmospheric performance. The Mk.1's twin turbo lasers gave place to a pair of revolutionary energized projectile weapons, which uses laser bolts to energize and accelerate solid shells to near-light speed. These new weapons provide the little fighter with devastating firepower. Shortly after its entry into service, the Mk.2s with retrofitted with a large belly pack with 2 missile launchers and countermeasure dispensers. The pack can accommodate 2 missiles or mini probes. The Mk2 outclassed and decimated the original Cyoln Type-1 Raiders when it entered service, and was a key factor in defeating the numerically superior Cylons.

The Mk.2 was extremely popular with its pilots and enjoyed a service career longer than most of the later variants until finally replaced by the definitive Mk.7. The Mk2 was to unexpectedly fulfill a major role in the second war with the Evolved Cylons.
