Colonial Viper Mk.1 Interceptor
The Colonial Viper Mk.1 was operated by human colonies who are distant ancestors of the humans of the planet Earth. The Viper is a short-ranged, sub-light interceptor that must rely on a hyper-drive capable mothership called a Battlestar to provide a base of operation. The Viper is very compact, and powered by a trio of powerful ion-fusion engines that endow the Viper with tremendous sublight speed and acceleration. The fighter is unshielded, and rely on its high speed and agility for protection, and usually operate at squadron strength. Twin turbo-lasers form the little fighter's sole armament. Viper pilots are highly trained and highly motivated. The Viper Mk.1 formed the backbone of their fighter force and was instrumental in protecting the survivors of the human colonies from extinction at the hands of their archenemy, the Cylons. The basic Viper design has evolved tremendously over time, keeping pace with their Cylon adversaries. The basic philosophy of the Viper design has carried through many successive variants, such as the Mk.2, Mk.4 and the definitive Mk.7.
