Y-Wing
The venerable Y-Wing was the Rebellion's first major starfighter type and was the backbone of the Rebel starfighter fleet extensively until the advent of the X-Wing. Slow and stable, it is at a distinct disadvantage in combat against modern starfighters. However, the Y-Wing's versatility, ruggedness and good firepower has ensured its longevity of service with the New Republic in the surface attack role. The new B-Wing has largely replaced the old Y-WINGs as the New Republic's Capital-ship assault fighter, but the B-Wing's configuration does not suit it to the surface attack mission, a role in which the Y-Wing continues to excel. The Y-Wing is also increasingly used by pirates and private military forces.
